How do I know which XBox model# I have?
XBox Version
modchip.org has compiled this info so that you may be better informed about our products and the installation. If you have any questions please contact at first our Forum.

Key Features Outside the XBox

At present their are 7 versions, they differ slightly by the Main board, DVD Rom drive brand and the Harddrive brand, but all work the same to the user. A basic way to identify which version you have is by the last 5 digits of the serial Number, found on the underside of the console, and can be viewed on a new boxed console through the hole on one of the sides. If you want to really know what version you have you will have to open your xbox. If you want to put a modchip in your X-Box later you will have to open it anyway :-)

Please note that these rules may not apply to refurbished models!

1. Manufacturing Date and Serial Number:

On the bottom of the Xbox, you can see the manufacturing date and the serial number. The manufacturing date is in the following format:

YYYY-MM-DD
(Year-Month-Day) which is the date according to ISO 8601

The serial number looks like this:
LNNNNNN YWWFF

  • L the number of the production line within the factory
  • NNNNNN the number of the XBox within this week
  • Y the last digit of the production year
  • WW the number of the week of the production year
  • FF is the code of the factory (02: Mexico, 03: Hungary, 05: China)

2. The Factory:

Look at the factory code, i.e. the last two digits of the serial number.
If the factory code is "03" (Hungary), you are done: You can be sure that it is a v1.0 Xbox. You can even be sure that it contains a Thomson DVD drive.

If the factory code is "02" (Mexico), it is either a v1.0 or a v1.1 Xbox. Look at the manufacturing date: If it is November 2002 or later, you have a v1.1 Xbox, else it's a v1.0.

If the factory code is "05" (China), you have at least a v1.1 Xbox.

3. Special Edition:

All Xboxes since 2003 have been manufactured in China. A Chinese box can be a v1.1, v1.2, v1.3, v1.4, v1.5 or v1.6.

If you have a "Special Edition" Xbox (translucent green), you have version 1.2, which has been made in weeks 8 and 9 of 2003 on lines 2, 5 and 6.

4.
Check if there's a FAN on the GPU:

Open your Xbox and remove the HDD & DVD-ROM.
If there's a fan on the GPU heatsink (next to CPU) you have a v1.0

If there's no fan you have a v1.1, v1.2, v1.3, v1.4 or v1.5

5. Check if there's a USB PCB:

Open your Xbox and check the USB chipset.
If it's a separate PCB you have a v1.0

If it's on the Xbox motherboard you have a v1.1, v1.2, v1.3, v1.4 or v1.5

6. Power Connector:

The power connector has on v1.0 and v1.1 one row of connectors and a double range of connectors on v1.2, v1.3, v1.4, v1.5.

7.
Compare the BIOS area:

"d0" and traces nearby are placed the same way on v1.0 and v1.1 , but differently on v1.2, v1.3, v1.4, v1.5 - Compare the location of the traces and points inside the yellow circle to find out your version. Also note the different number of legs on the onboard bios (top of yellow circle) : Xbox v1.0 and v1.1 have 20legs on each side of the bios, v1.2, v1.3, v1.4, v1.5 has 16legs.

8. Video Chip:

These two pictures are to determine the Xbox version from v1.3 to v1.4 / v1.5
If you have a "Conexant" chip, then you have a v1.3 or v1.4

If you have a "Focus" written chip, you have a v1.4 or v1.5
There is no true way of telling the difference at this time.

If you have a "Xcalibur" and the Xbox Logo on the chip, then you have a v1.6

9.
LPC Ground / Power:

There's no visual method to distinguish a v1.5 from a v1.4.
XBox v1.5 has power (pin 9) and ground (pin 2) disconnected from LPC.
So you will have to measure if pin 2 (ground) on the LPC-bus is connected to the ground plane (a screw, for example) or not. Use a multimeter to check if pin2 (red point on image) is connected with ground (screw plate for example - red point on image).

If there is no connection between the red points you have a v1.5 Xbox

10.
Serial Number:

We do NOT know if this test is 100% accurate !!!
  • v1.0 - Serial Number LNNNNNN 2xxxx
  • v1.1 - Serial Number LNNNNNN 24xxx
  • v1.2 - Serial Number LNNNNNN 30xxx
  • v1.3 - Serial Number LNNNNNN 31xxx
  • v1.4 - Serial Number LNNNNNN 32xxx
  • v1.4 / 1.5 - Serial Number LNNNNNN 33xxx
