| 1. |
In order to begin your ModChip modification you will need the following:
-
Low watt soldering iron (15-30 watt) with a fine
tip
-
Solder
- Wires
- Doublesided adhesive tape
-
Philips head screwdriver (also known as a 'star')
-
Flat head screwdriver (also known as a 'slot')
Now that you have the materials we are ready to modify the slim
line PSTwo
CAUTION: Disconnect all power and A/V cords from
your PlayStation 2 and ensure that all devices including memory cards,
controllers, compact discs and / or DVD’s are removed from the
system.
|
| |
|
| 2. |
Turn your slim
line PSTwo upside down and remove all 6 screw caps. These caps cover
the PS2 assembly screws. Note: that the top two pads do not
cover screws and should not be removed. (Tip: Pry the caps off gently
using a small flat head screw driver.)
|
| |
|
| |
|
| 3. |
At this point you have to be bold and cut the guarantee sticker (this
voids your guarantee/warranty so be aware of this when installing your
modchip).
|
| |
|
| |
|
| 4. |
Having cut the sticker, you should find that the case will come apart
easily. |
| |
|
| |
|
| 5. |
Remove the top of the PSTwo and put it to one side. |
| |
|
| |
|
| 6. |
Locate the infrared component to the right of the USB sockets at the
front of the slim
line PSTwo. Carefully unplug and lift out. Place the infrared
component aside until reassembly. |
| |
|
| |
|
| 7. |
Unscrew the final screw holding the innards to the case.
|
| |
|
| |
|
| 8. |
You can now lift out the PSTwo mainboard. |
| |
|
| |
|
| 9. |
Next unscrew the fan. |
| |
|
| |
|
| 10. |
Some tape holds the fan wire in place. Lift off this tape and remove.
Replace when reassembling the PSTwo later. |
| |
|
| |
|
| 11. |
Lift the fan from the mainboard, carefully unplug and place aside until
reassembly. |
| |
|
| |
|
| 12. |
Gently lift out the connector from its socket. Be careful not to touch
the DVD laser either now or in later steps. |
| |
|
| |
|
| 13. |
Gently lift out the ribbon connector from its socket.
|
| |
|
| |
|
| 14. |
Gently lift out this third connector from its socket. |
| |
|
| |
|
| 15. |
Unscrew the four screws holding in the slim
line PSTwo DVD mechanism.
|
| |
|
| |
|
| 16. |
Carefully lift out the DVD mechanism being careful of the ribbon connector
to the underside.
|
| |
|
| |
|
| 17. |
Carefully unplug the ribbon cable from the underside of the DVD mechanism.
This is one of the more fragile connectors and can be difficult to remove
and reconnect. Treat with care.
|
| |
|
| |
|
| 18. |
Carefully lift out the DVD mechanism and place aside until reassembly.
|
| |
|
| |
|
| 19. |
Next unscrew the screws from the top metal casing.
|
| |
|
| |
|
| 20. |
And remove the screws from the bottom metal casing.
|
| |
|
| |
|
| 21. |
Once all screws have been removed, the metal casing can be lifted off.
Be careful how you remove it, however. Start by lifting off the metal
casing from the underside (do not lift off the casing from the top yet).
|
| |
|
| |
|
| 22. |
This reveals the mainboard onto which you will need to solder connections
to your modchip.
|
| |
|
| |
|
| 23. |
This is why you need to be careful of the top. The green PSTwo
CMOS battery can be unplugged but this should not be risked - it is not
known if unplugging
this CMOS has side effects.
|
| |
|
| |
|
| 24. |
Instead hold on to the CMOS while lifting the metal casing up.
|
| |
|
| |
|
| 25. |
Prop the top metal casing vertically against something so that the
main board can be worked on without disconnecting the CMOS.
|
| |
|
| |
|
| |
Now you have the board exposed match it to one of the installation-pictures
on the product page. WE ARE NOW READY TO INSTALL THE
MODCHIP
CAUTION: Due to the heat involved in
soldering, you must only hold the iron tip on the pad to be soldered
for enough time
to allow the solder to flow. If too much heat is applied to the contact
it may damage the chip, lift a PCB trace or burn insulation back on the
wire. If you burn the insulation off of the wire, trim and re-solder
the
connection. Removing too much insulation could result in the exposed
copper wire touching other traces on the board. This is hazardous to
the slim
line PSTwo unit.

You can now tape the ModChip on the board in a clear area where it will
not be damaged.
After double-checking all connections and soldering points,
follow the above steps in reverse order to re-assemble the PSTwo.
Once you have completely re-assembled the unit, plug in your power source
and video outputs. Power up the slim
line PSTwo.
Test the unit FIRST with an original game. |
